●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
Until recently I didnt care too much about the Superview effect.
I read it often in cheap cams – they try to imitate Gopros patented way of stretching 4:3 (full sensor) footage onto the popular 16:9 format (i.e. 1920×1080).
Why full sensor readout? You get the most wideangle shot.
Why wideangle shot in FPV? It makes you look fast and it goes well with freestyle!

So you can try to still find a (refurbished) Gopro Session 5. It’s the most popular cam in the right form factor (small, dice).
Usually that’s a bit expensive – and depending on where you life – hard to find / order online.

Of course there are many competitors to gopro – like Runcam (they’ve been sued by gopro in the past) or Foxeer.
Not to get sued again – Runcam just provides the “correct” resolution like 1920×1440@60 fps,
and you have to take care of proper stretching yourself.

For this task I tested a few methods and here you will find a tutorial for 2 ways.
●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
●1: Gopro Studio
+ free and easy, good superview implementation (probbably the same as in their cams?)
– a few additional steps, recoding (CPU time), large intermediate files (10 times the orig footage)

●2: Magix Vegas 17 (just the video editor I use)
+ just apply a filter onto the orig footage, easy to setup, no recoding, integrates well in normal editing, fast!
– expensive (if you dont already have Vegas), not perfect quality (mesh warp isnt perfect)

●3: After Effects – non linear stretching
Didnt test this myself, I’m not into Adobe products, but most likely the same pro’s and cons like Vegas above!

●4: Nuke Foundry:
+ free software (for personal use), good quality
– big installation, registration, getting a free license, complicated workflow, not intuitive, recoding
Similar to GoproStudio – just not as accessible imho.

●5: (and ongoing as I find more ways):
VIRTUAL DUB filter “barrel distortion” combined with avisynth filter “warped resize”

  • Yes! This is the only way to go (gp app) . All other options I've seen have never looked "right"
Resolve does have lens correction/distortion but not the automatic one only the manual one, which is a pain to use and I could never get it to look right.

  • Shameless plug time!
    https://github.com/banelle/derperview
It uses the same algorithm as the Niek script (which was itself a Go port of something I kludged together in Python), but it comes with all of the necessary dependencies, so it should be easy to download and run.

  • Update: just tried the FFMPEG -> NIEK Script mehtod. Really easy! (looks a bit DOS, but dont be scared). Encoded a 5min flight in Superview (all settings automatically) in 19mins (on a i7 7700k). The result looks quite promising. Same size as the orig file, loss of quality (probbably) but not visible to me.
Could be a good alternative for the lazy.
Download FFMPEG and the script: https://github.com/Niek/superview/blob/master/README.md
copy FFMPEGBIN files to your Windowssystem32 folder
start the superview-windows-amd64-v0.2.exe file in a dos box (because it needs a parameter -i input.mp4)
again: this sounds DIY and scary – but it's REALLY EASY!
Let me know if you need another tutorial – OBS recorder is still ready here 🙂

Update: I've made a little BAT file so you can encode multiple files (all MP4 in current dir).
    Check it here: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3395215-FREE-and-EASY-Superview-effect-for-non-Gopro-Actioncams&perpage=30#post42625237

  • Didn't Andy RC get a YouTube warning for showing how to dynamically stretching something about the software and not being able to show it to us i saw the video he had to latter remove i know he was hoping you would make a video showing how to do this

  • Hi, you can check the easiest and free way to get Superview effect here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfe0wNkmwUI . We used a script Bardwell linked on his channel (maid by Niek). With a simple click you get real Superview from 4/3 1440p footage.

  • I still don't understand the enthusiasm for superview, it takes an already distorted fisheye image and distorts it further, I take 4:3 recordings and stretch them out to 16:9 by using a barrel correction filter on VirtualDub, it gives you rectilinear footage where straight lines look straight again, and has the added effect of making proximity flights look faster.
All my Hawk 5 HD videos are filtered this way, Caddx even included the same stretching filter into their Tarsier, but the sides get cropped off, so I use the VirtualDub filter to get identical footage, but without the sides cropped.
