Darzee is a songbird. In other words, he has a beautiful voice, but that’s about it. In practical terms, his mind is too prone to soar, as we see when he composes songs for Rikki-tikki’s victory while otherwise doing nothing to help the mongoose (64-70).

So Darzee starts the conflict by explaining how Nag ate one of Darzee’s babies that fell out of the nest, and later, and he also fills in some details about what after what happened to Rikki and the man team up to kill Nag. From the bird we learn that Nag’s body was thrown onto the rubbish heap.
Teddy’s mother and father are a typical, almost clichĂ©d (or should we rather be archetypal?) mother-father duo. The mother is a bit shy when it comes to all things “nature”, as we see when she’s afraid to let Rikki-Tikki sleep with Teddy (15).

Darzee and his wife are the tailor birds who help Rikki in his fight against the cobras. They are in danger because the cobras are preying on them and their babies. They mourn first because one of their babies was eaten by Nag. “We are very unhappy,” said Darzee.
Nag is the male cobra that inhabits the garden in front of the family’s bungalow. Nag is one of the antagonists of this short story, simply because he goes into battle with the protagonist, Rikki-Tikki.
Darzee was a feathery little fellow who could never think of more than one idea at a time; and just knowing that Nagaina’s children were born in eggs like his own, at first he didn’t think it was fair to kill her.
Darzee, the tailor bird, helped him, and Chuchundra, the musk rat, who never gets on the middle of the floor but always crawls around the wall, gave him advice ; but Rikki-tikki did the actual fighting.
Darzee’s wife pretended to have a broken wing to pull Naigaina away from the melon patch where the cobra’s eggs were hidden…
