Stripes on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belts are used to indicate a student’s level within a specific belt rank. More stripes indicate a higher level of performance. For example, a 4-stripe blue belt is a higher level than a 2-stripe blue belt.
Depending on your individual progress and how often you train per week, the first stripe will be awarded within approximately 3-6 months of training. Your coaches decide your first strip based on a few factors; Ability to perform techniques, length of time you have trained and number of courses attended.

Second degree black belts may promote black belts previously registered with IBJJF as brown belts and below. However, only 3rd degree or higher certificate instructors may promote black belts who have never had an IBJJF registration, or black belts who have never had an IBJJF brown belt registration.
At the black belt level, stripes are called grades and are more formal. Typically, each black belt degree takes three years to complete. Therefore, a streak on a black belt represents more time spent training since receiving the black belt than the time it took to earn an entire colored belt rank (e.g., blue to purple).
