A heterogeneous audience is rare. Audience size and formality are NOT directly related.
A homogeneous audience – one whose members are of a similar age, have similar characteristics, attitudes, values and skills – is rare. Most of the time you will be speaking to a diverse audience – one made up of people of different ages with different characteristics, attitudes, values and skills.
Regardless of the industry you work for or what part of the world you are based in, your audience is diverse. Fact. It is made up of different ages, backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations and identities, disabilities, long-term health conditions and educational levels.
Use main points in a speech. First, you can brainstorm on the main idea or the specific purpose of the speech. This involves a group or individual activity that creates a list of ideas to either solve a problem or generate new ideas. Let’s use an example to explain.
Heterogeneous means that the individual members of the crowd come from the most diverse classes and categories of society. Anonymous means that the individuals in the crowd do not know each other. A good introduction must catch the audience’s attention, state the topic, make the topic understandable, establish credibility, and preview the main points. Introductions should be the last part of the speech as they create expectations and need to fit the content.
When brainstorming for speech topics, write “What topic do you want my speech to cover?” at the top of a new piece of paper. Then, under the question, have yourself write down what comes to your mind for a predetermined period of time. Get as many different answers to the question as you can think of.
