When F1 heifers breed, their offspring will be F2. The young of the F2 heifer is an F3 heifer. The designations help the buyer know what breed traits to expect as some traits such as milk production can increase over several generations with selective breeding.
Angus beef has been a hot topic in recent years thanks to its well-marbled meat, which typically earns USDA Prime or Choice ratings and usually the best, highest quality meat available in grocery stores.

Re: Hardiest breed of cattle
Composites based on British hair breeds tend to be the hardiest cattle in colder climates. Breeds like the Luing (Shorthorn/Highland) and the U of A Synthetic (Angus/Charolais/Galloway) have proven to be at least as hardy as Herfords, Highlands or Galloways.
Because of this, the Maine-Anjou breed evolved into a dual-purpose breed, with the cows being used for milk production and the bull calves being fed for the market. It is still common on many farms for Maine-Anjou cattle to be milked. In many herds, half the cows are milked and the other half raise two calves each.

A&M-Commerce’s animal science program would then create a “Super Baldy” by breeding its F1 hybrids with Hereford bulls. The term “bald” comes from the Super Baldy’s mostly solid white face with a dark colored body. The university currently has over a dozen Super Baldy hens that are kept as surrogates.
