There are only two surviving documents that relate to the original Thanksgiving feast. They describe a feast of freshly killed deer, assorted wildfowl, an abundance of cod and perch, and flint, a native corn crop harvested by Native Americans and eaten as cornbread and oatmeal.
The Thursday holiday has Sarah Josepha Hale to her credit for helping him gain national recognition. Thanksgiving prior to 1863 was something of a moveable festival, with states honoring the holiday at various times or not at all.
On Thanksgiving Day, Washington attended services at St. Paul’s Chapel in New York City and donated beer and food to incarcerated debtors around the city.
Does it involve baking a pumpkin, pecan, or apple pie? While this is quite a tradition today, the pilgrims didn’t have sweeteners like sugar, molasses, or even honey. Turns out the desserts on the big day were sweetened with something else entirely: dried grapes and raisins!

In a state of desperation soon after their arrival, the pilgrims stole corn from Native American graves and storehouses; but due to their overall lack of preparation, half of them died within their first year.
