The composer Francisco Santiago (1889-1947) is sometimes referred to as the “father of the Kundiman Art Song”. While his masterpiece is considered his Concerto in B flat minor for pianoforte and orchestra, one of his most significant pieces is his song Kundiman, (Anak-Dalita), the first Kundiman art song.

Remarkably, Santiago’s most famous play, “Kundiman (Anak-Dalita)“, was written in 1917 at the request of King Alfonso XIII. sung before the Royal Court of Spain.
His most important orchestral works are Misa Antoniana Grand Festival Mass (1964) and Ang Batingaw (1972). His chamber music compositions include Prelude and Romance for cello and piano (1928) and Bontok Rhapsody. Some of his piano works are “Malikmata” (1939) and “We Were Moonlight” (1941).
Abelardo has been credited with bringing the Kundiman to the level of art. He also composed music for the sarswela, as well as songs in various musical forms. He completed more than 140 compositions, including Are You Sleeping?, Sometimes Tears, Beauty of the Side and Scarring Star.
