Dirty edits are often a side effect of mod creation and are often due to bugs in the utilities that Bethesda has provided for mod creation, rather than bad practices by mod authors. Dirty edits can cause a variety of issues including incorrect game settings, missing content, abandoned quests, and crashing on desktop.
A mod that is “dirty” means that it contains “dirty edits”. This means it contains ITM records. ITM means Identical To Master (masters are the main Bethesda files from the game itself).
Mods Clean removes identical Master File records and deletes dirty edits which can reduce/eliminate CTDs by removing files the game doesn’t need, this is most useful after modding the game and after removing mods in many cases you won’t notice much difference, especially if Skyrim is that…
Skyrim Special Edition and Enderal SE have a total limit of 254 full plugins (ESM + ESP) and 4096 light plugins (ESL).
Dip a cotton swab in some rubbing alcohol and wipe through the bottom of the plugin. Push the cotton swab through the hole to remove the oil buildup. Then, turn the plug over so it’s facing up and slide a clean cotton swab through each of the grille’s holes to dislodge any oil buildup.
Currently, most modding guides still recommend cleaning them, although very few state why. In contrast, many mod authors see no benefit in cleaning them, or recommend not cleaning them, including those on the higher end of providing support.
xEdit provides several tools to help mod authors clean their mods of redundant/duplicate references, repair deleted references and merge plugins. These utilities can help a mod author avoid many conflicts with other mods and are considered good practice.
SSEEdit is the Skyrim: Special Edition version of xEdit. xEdit is an advanced graphical module viewer/editor and conflict detector.
Why do I have to do this? The simple answer is like any other Bethesda game; The FO4 DLCs were released without bothering to clean up the files first. It’s not an accident, they just don’t seem to care. They are not required and can be safely removed.
It is recommended that all players downloading Falskaar should not clean as it does not contain any dirty edits.
Inigo does not need to be cleaned.”
Missing scripts will cause errors and will eventually corrupt your save, so I recommend using the cleanest possible save. This applies not only to Helgen Reborn, but to all scripted mods.
The absolute upper limit is 253 mods in total. However, this only counts for certain types of mods; especially those who have a . esm or . esp file so they can change actual data in game (i.e. not mods that simply change models or textures).
