There is no hard and fast rule as to when tweens can go on dates. Remember that even if you ban boyhood relationships and dating, your tween may spend a lot of time with someone special at school.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children start at an average age of 12.5 for girls and 13.5 for boys. However, every teenager – or preteen – is different, and your child may be ready sooner or later than their peers.
Dating while you’re in middle school gives you a chance to really discover who you are as a person. Dating offers a lot of experience when it comes to making decisions, solving problems and communicating. You can have exciting experiences that give you the opportunity to learn something new about yourself.
There is no specific age that people “should” start dating – many people don’t start until their late teens or later, and some people start earlier. But dating when you’re 12 is different than dating when you’re in high school or older.

IllicitEncounters, a British married dating site, conducted its own survey and found that out of a random pool of 1,000 people, 25 percent are still with their first love. Marrying your first love sounds like a Disney romance; but like any relationship, sometimes it lasts and sometimes it doesn’t.
The study suggests that students who date in middle school have significantly poorer study skills, are four times more likely to drop out, and use twice as much alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana than their single classmates.
For middle school students, swearing becomes a way to differentiate themselves from adults, to push boundaries, and to test boundaries. So I wasn’t surprised when the girls reported hearing more and more swearing as they got into middle school. So we understand that it’s “normal” for tweens/teens to want to swear.
Love is in the air
However, there is no need to wait for the official first date to spend a little face time. Americans agree that children are ready for their first kiss by the age of 15 (average 15.1), while the average age they had theirs was 14.5.
California, however, does not have a Romeo and Juliet law. Anyone who has sexual intercourse with another person under the age of majority may be charged with a criminal offence. The only exception is when the sex partners were legally married.
Consider their emotional maturity and sense of responsibility. 16 seems like a reasonable age for many children, but it can be quite appropriate for a mature 15-year-old to go on a date, or to keep your immature 16-year-old waiting a year or two. You can also consider what other parents are doing.
