engine. The Jetta 1.9 L TDI Turbo draws its power from a 1.9 liter four-cylinder in-line engine that runs on diesel fuel. This eight-valve, SOHC engine has a 3.13-inch bore, 3.76-inch stroke, and 18.5-to-1 compression ratio. It produces 100 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque 1,800 rpm.

In technical terms, TSI stands for “turbocharged stratified injection” while TDI stands for “turbocharged direct injection“. If you’re having a hard time remembering which is which, remember the D in TDI which means it has the diesel engine.

Ex works, a TDI Jetta delivers 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Acceptable. After the first dyno run, TFL confirmed that a TDI equipped Jetta put 138 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, better than advertised!
Volkswagen 1.9L ALH TDI Diesel
While Volkswagen has produced many very good diesel engines over the years, the ‘ALH’ engine used between 1998 and 2006 is considered one of them them the best. These engines were only used in cars, with displacements of 1.9 liters on 4 cylinders; Direct injection and turbocharger.
The 1.9 is a bit more economical, the 2.0 is easier to turn, smoother, faster, quieter. However, the 1.9 only has a 5 gear. The 2.0 doesn’t pull quite as well from low revs (the 1.9 is like a tank), but is less spiky.
Advantages of the TDI
In contrast to other diesel engines, the TDI gives the engine a lot of boost. This helps it reflect the speed and quick gear changes of a petrol car, although diesel will stay in the same gear for a while.
Newer diesel engines
But diesel engines are generally noisier than gasoline engines. The reason for this is they have graduated injection. This means that the fuel pulse is divided into stages with the pilot, combustion and post-combustion injection pulses. This drastically reduces noise.
American consumers would be forgiven for thinking so given the fallout from the infamous Volkswagen Group diesel emissions cheating scandal. After the VW Group was caught illegally using software to reduce emissions, the VW Group has decided to stop selling diesel models from its VW, Audi and Porsche brands in the US.
Volkswagen placed its 1.9-liter turbocharged direct injection (TDI) engine in several different models in the 1990s and 2000s – mainly the Golf and Jetta. The TDI engine was upgraded in 2003 when it received a pump style fuel injection system.
Volkswagen started producing the 1.9 TDI engine in the early 90’s and ran until 2007.
For its latest Passat for the European market, VW has introduced a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-engine diesel that has the highest specific power output of any four-cylinder diesel on the market at 236hp. But now VW says it can get even more out of this engine – up to 268hp to be exact.
If you are looking for more performance, the most important thing you can do is chip tune or ECU reflash. There is no easier or cheaper way to achieve significant performance gains. Chip tuning increases performance by things like increasing turbo boost, increasing air-fuel ratio, increasing fuel delivery, and advancing injection timing.
