We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.
You can purchase the movie or TV show on another device and then watch it on your game console using the instructions above. Note: For movie rentals, your movie will be available during the rental period after you start watching it for the first time. Purchases will be available to watch as many times as you like.

Rental restrictions to keep in mind
The video must be watched within 30 days of payment. Once viewing has been started you have 24, 48 or 72 hours to finish watching it. This rental period can differ depending on the title.
As of Aug. 31, 2021, the PlayStation Store will stop offering movie and TV show purchases and rentals. Sony said it is exiting the transactional VOD business — after more than a decade — because it sees more PlayStation users adopting free and subscription streaming-video services.
Much like deprecated games and other software, viewers will still be able to download movies and TV that they’ve bought through the PS4 and PS5’s Library section. They can also play their content on mobile devices.
You can access and download all of your existing PlayStation Plus content. Additionally, you will still be able to access your already purchased content from your respective devices.
The easiest option to watch movies on your PS4 is to put your games back in the box and put your favorite DVD or Blu-ray in the disc reader. Make sure you’re already in the PlayStation main menu and your PS4 automatically opens the media player to play your movie.

The timing of this news is no coincidence as August 31, 2021, was the date Sony announced it was discontinuing purchases of movies and TV shows through the Playstation Store. At the time, however, the company stated that customers would still be able to have access to any previously purchased content.
According to Sony’s blog post about the change, the largest driver behind its decision was the increased used of subscription and ad-based streaming services, not just those that allow rentals. And the PlayStation Store has plenty of options there too, with services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Peacock.
I spent part of the last few days watching Netflix movies on my TV set. Netflix has long allowed members to rent movies on DVDs and, since January, has enabled Windows users to watch them on a PC.
