Sensitive Compartment Information
In order to gain access to SCI material, one must first have TOP SECRET clearance and be indoctrinated into the SCI program. There are explicit indoctrinations for each department under the umbrella of the SCI program.
Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) is a classification identifier associated with sensitive data and information pertaining to a specific program or department. The data can come from multiple sources such as Critical Program Information (CPI), analytical data and/or intelligence data.
SCI is not a classification. The SCI release has been labeled “above top secret”, but information at any level of classification may exist within an SCI control system.

Indoctrination is the instruction given to a person before gaining access to an SCI system or program. The instructions convey the unique nature, unusual sensitivity, and special security precautions and practices for dealing with SCI, particularly the need to protect sensitive sources and methods.
SCI Materials may be transmitted electronically between appropriately accredited devices (fax, computer, secure voice, secure e-mail or other means of telecommunication), ensuring that such transmissions are made only to authorized recipients .
