This brings us back to the question, “How far can I see my laser beam?” As mentioned earlier, there are many different factors to consider, but here’s a basic guideline. 200mW green lasers are visible for greater than 10miles and 1000mW or greater blue lasers are also visible for 10miles or more on a clear day.
This green laser pointer has a reported range of 80 km (50 miles). The laser is also highly visible during the day, well over 30 meters (100 feet) — and probably more — even in bright daylight I discovered daylight (see picture below). SKYlaser laser pointers are about the size of a Sharpie pen.
A 2000 mW green laser is flash blind up to 5,200 ft (approx. 1 mile), blinding/disrupting up to 24,000 ft (4.5 miles) and 234,000 feet (44 miles) distraction prone. b>.
The 1mW red pointer has a glare range of 255 feet compared to a green laser of the same power which can cause a glare at 490 feet.
A 5 milliwatt laser: a deflection 2 miles away
In the United States, lasers sold for pointing purposes cannot exceed 5 mW. The following chart shows the hazard distances for a 5 milliwatt “U.S. Legal green laser pointer with a beam divergence of 1 milliradian: It is a potential eye hazard from the pointer up to approximately 52 feet.

The typical red laser pointer is around 5 milliwatts, and a good beam will have a beam powerful enough to actually hit the moon — although then it would be spread over much of the surface has arrived. The light from a laser in space would go on forever if it didn’t hit something. However, if you were far enough away, you wouldn’t be able to see the light. A projectile would also go on forever if it didn’t hit something. Lasers produce light that can be tightly focused.
Under federal law, it is perfectly legal to sell lasers greater than 5mW as long as the laser meets FDA/CDRH requirements for laser products for labels, security features, quality control, etc. AND as long as the laser is not advertised as a “laser pointer” or for pointing purposes.
So the advantage of the 5mW version is: Its beam is stronger than that of the 1mW version. It could be used in the field of light pollution. The advantage of the 1mW is that it is more powerful than the 5mW version. Therefore it could be used longer than the 5mW version.
