Because most pre-veterinary medicine students are interested in life sciences and/or working with animals, they typically choose either sciences that are applied to working with animals (e.g. animal science, wildlife biology), or basics of natural sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, zoology).
Pre-Veterinary Medicine is the equivalent of Pre-Med, the undergraduate courses you take to prepare for medical school. This usually means a science degree with many life science and related courses.
“Pre-Vet” is usually a term for the Bio or Chem major available at any university and then going to vet school. Animal Science is the “hardcore” major for working with large farm animals (horses, pigs, cows, chickens, etc.) on your way to vet school.
While there is no veterinary medicine major at UC Davis, you can (and must) still take a number of required courses before the end of the spring term prior to matriculation if you wish to be accepted into veterinary school will. Veterinary schools across the country each have their own list of pre-access requirements.
Although prospective medical students must complete the MCAT before applying to medical school, most people agree that veterinary training is more difficult than medical training. Vet school is not more difficult because it requires more strenuous work. Studying medicine is just as demanding.
Get a solid background in math and science. Study and maintain a high GPA and high SAT/ACT scores. Gain as much pet experience as possible. Consider volunteering at your local humane society or a local veterinarian.

This may seem obvious, but the grades in your courses, especially your science courses, make up a large part of your application to veterinary school. Most vet schools will review your choice of courses very carefully in the last three or four semesters and will generally look for a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
