Sanitizing and disinfecting wipes are fine to touch while you’re cleaning with them, but they should never be used to clean hands or other body parts. Disinfecting wipes, such as Nice ‘N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes, contain chemicals that kill bacteria and viruses, which may cause skin irritation.
As a disinfectant agent, Clorox wipes have active ingredients of hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide. On the other hand, Lysol wipes have active ingredients of benzalkonium chloride which is an antimicrobial agent that kills most viruses in the family of Mononegavirales (enterovirus, coronavirus, influenza virus).
Lysol lists uses for these wipes that include cleaning windows, toilet seats, wiping up spills and grease, disinfecting surfaces – where the house is concerned, the versatility of these wipes is impressive.
While most wipes are safe to use on hard, non-porous surfaces like laminate, sealed granite, vinyl, and fiberglass, they are not safe to use on unfinished wood or extremely worn surfaces. Always test in a small area to make sure there is no etching or discoloration.
“Lysol spray is a disinfectant — it’s designed for use on surfaces,” said Joe Rubino, director of research and development for microbiology at Reckitt Benckiser, Lysol’s parent company. “It is not meant to be used on the body, whether it be humans or pets. By no means should you do that.”
Product Description. Bleach- and alcohol-free disinfectant wipes clean and deodorize highly sensitive workspaces. Safe on vinyl and nonporous surfaces, wipes provide maximum coverage on hospital beds, carts, counters and exam tables. Kills 99.9% of germs on hard, nonporous surfaces.
Don’t use a Clorox wipe to clean it off. The ingredients in the wipes can cause skin irritation and may even lead to more staining of the fabric.
“They’re designed to kill viruses and bacteria on hard surfaces like doorknobs, counters, TV remotes and even phones,” says Dr. McWilliams. They don’t work on soft surfaces like clothing or upholstery. The germ-killing ingredient on disinfecting wipes is a chemical pesticide, so you shouldn’t use them on your skin.
According to the American Journal of Infection Control, disinfectant wipes produced much better results when compared to spray-based disinfectants. It has been demonstrated that wipes are more effective and better for gym equipment.
If cloths and sprays are used, it can result in uneven coverage and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the product. Generally speaking, wipes are the best option when it comes to cleaning in high infection risk areas, or anywhere you want to be sure to kill bacteria and/or viruses.
“These chemicals should not be left on your skin,” Dr. Green says. Definitely don’t use the wipes routinely on your hands or face. And keep them away from kids; their skin is even more delicate and sensitive.
