Gelatin and divide into 4 small bowls, add 1-1/2 tsp. gelatin to each bowl. Add another food coloring and 1 tsp. of the remaining water to gelatin in each bowl; stir until combined.
Heat the sugar and vanilla sugar with 1/2 cup milk, stirring constantly. Remove from heat when steam appears above the surface. Add gelatin and stir until fully dissolved, then add remaining 1/2 cup milk. Mix in the white food coloring using an immersion blender or hand mixer and allow to cool before use.
In general, gel/paste food coloring can be used interchangeably with liquid coloring, you simply need to use a lot less (gel/paste coloring can be very inexpensive!). A powder paint is most commonly used in applications where water is prohibited, such as in chocolate and dry mixes.
You can use any red food coloring you have! Gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid so you don’t have to use as much, but liquid food coloring is fine too. Powdered food coloring is very concentrated, so start with a small amount.

For icing sugar that you use as a powder, decoration dusts are the best choice. Knead with the sugar and use. Food coloring can be used to color powdered sugar, which dissolves when mixed with a small amount of liquid, such as milk or freshly squeezed lemon juice, or used in an icing.
Liquid food coloring is made from water-based synthetic dyes. The water base makes it very “runny” and fairly low in concentration. I find that liquid food coloring often gives me more pastel colors because it’s not highly concentrated.

There is no conclusive evidence that food coloring is dangerous for most people. However, they can cause allergic reactions in some people and hyperactivity in sensitive children. However, most food colorings are found in unhealthy processed foods that should be avoided anyway.
