Use the scanner software built into Windows instead of the software that came with your printer. You can access it by clicking Start and then Devices and Printers. Then you should be able to select the scanner icon, which will launch the Windows scan utility. This works regardless of the ink status.
Use the built-in camera on your phone or tablet to take a photo of your document. Then attach the photo to your email. This option turns your mobile device or tablet into a document scanner. Similar to taking a photo, the app will convert your photo into a PDF or similar file type.
The ink cartridge is only used for printing and xeroxing. When scanning, the scanner simply reads the data and uses the software to store it in memory, and then writes it to the user-specified location on the hard drive or other storage medium. The color cartridge or the black cartridge is not required for scanning.
Direct thermal printers do not require any ink or toner. A direct thermal printer is equipped with a “thermal head” that generates heat. This thermal head selectively heats the special paper as it rolls through.
It may or may not fix the scanning problem. Because if one of the cartridges is empty or damaged, the printer goes into an error mode and stops scanning/printing. Replacing this cartridge will exit the printer from error mode.
Go to your computer and click print on the file you want to print. Click Properties, then click the Color tab. Select the Print in Grayscale option by clicking the appropriate check box. You are now ready to start printing in black and white.
