Crème fraîche, a thick sour cream, is of French origin and means “fresh cream” in French. You can usually find it in small cups on the milk aisle at the grocery store, near the sour cream and cream cheese. It tastes a lot like sour cream, but is usually sold in much smaller cups.
Sour cream (lower fat) is the best and easiest substitute, but not as rich or flavorful as crème fraiche. Plain full-fat yogurt is another substitute, but it doesn’t have the same smooth texture or bland flavor.
Although crème fraiche is a staple in Europe, it’s not as common in the United States. You can find it at some grocery and specialty stores, but many American home cooks choose to make their own (more on that later) or use sour cream as an easy-to-find substitute. p>
You can buy crème fraîche in grocery stores or even in some supermarkets. It is often found in the dairy aisle or mixed with cheese specialties. Crème fraîche tends to be more expensive than sour cream and is easy to make at home with a few simple ingredients
Add heavy whipping cream to soups and sauces instead of crème fraîche to thicken them and give them a creamy texture. Cream is high in fat and doesn’t curdle, so use it like crème fraîche in soups and sauces. You can also whip your cream to use as a substitute for crème fraiche.
There is a product called Philadelphia Cooking Creme. Some find it a great substitute for crème fraiche and it doesn’t separate at high temperatures.
Creme fraiche is thicker, richer (see: Fat Content), and less flavorful than sour cream, and because it doesn’t curdle while cooking, it’s great for soups and sauces. Or just spoon it into your mouth without makeup.
This Trader Joe’s creme fraiche (pronounced krem fresh) is one of my uniquely favorite products that TJ’s sells. At $3.49, it’s significantly cheaper than crème fraîche at other grocery stores, and that’s assuming they even have it.

The most important difference between yogurt and crème fraîche to know is that yogurt is made from milk while crème fraîche is made from cream; and this initial difference in starting ingredients affects the cultivation process and ultimately the taste and texture of the final product.
A In short, sour cream is a single cream that has been given a sharp, sour note by the addition of a bacterial culture; Creme fraiche is similar to double cream cultured but made from high fat cream and is richer and thicker.
Double cream has a higher fat content – around 48-50%, and is not commonly available here. Crème fraîche, on the other hand, is cream to which a culture has been added that gives it a slightly sour taste. It has around 40 percent fat. However, if you’re trying to cook healthy, cream isn’t an everyday ingredient.
How does crème fraiche taste? Creme Fresh tastes like a fresher, richer, spicier version of sour cream. Richer because it contains more butterfat, flavorful because it contains different bacteria, and fresher because it’s typically made in smaller batches.
